German far-right group planned to kidnap health minister: media


German police have arrested top members of a far-right group for plotting to kidnap the country’s health minister and planning major terror attacks, local media reported on Thursday.

The group known as “Vereinte Patrioten” (Patriots United) hoped to obtain new weapons this week, before going ahead with its plan to kidnap Health Minister Karl Lauterbach and carry out coordinated bombings to create chaos across the country. the country, public broadcaster ARD reported.

German prosecutors in the city of Koblenz have confirmed, without revealing names, that “the kidnapping of well-known public figures was part of the plans” of the members of the group.

The group, which included anti-vaccines and supporters of the far-right movement Citizens of the Reich, used the encrypted chat app Telegram to communicate and planned bomb attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure to cause a massive blackout in Germany.

The suspects’ goal was to provoke “a civil war-like situation” and ultimately overthrow the democratic system in Germany, prosecutors and police said in a joint statement.

Four members of the group were arrested on Wednesday, following coordinated raids in nine federal states, including Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony and Brandenburg.

Police seized a Kalashnikov rifle, more than a dozen firearms, ammunition, as well as various electronic devices, documents, false vaccination certificates and coronavirus test reports, according to the statement.
